Providing a Safe Environment to Grow

In the clip below, from the movie Short Term 12, staff is giving Marcus a haircut. This may seem like an ordinary thing but there is much more to this moment due to the traumatic experiences Marcus has had. Everyday occurrences become potential triggers or titanic icebergs that we may not see coming. Everyday things that we take for granted may be extremely hard for others. Staff in this movie provided an environment where Marcus felt safe and comfortable trying new things and building new skills. He was able to express himself with staff that he built solid relationships with. He was able to begin healing.

Keep Moving Forward!

We all know that the holidays are some of the toughest times for our kids. We see an increase in challenging behaviors. We see clients and families struggling to stay on track. The holidays are a stressful time for a lot of people but when trauma is in play it can really affect their ability to cope with their emotions. Part of our jobs is to teach them better ways to manage those feelings and to support them by creating a safe space for them to explore and build those skills. A space where they can fail and it's ok. A space where we take the opportunity to reflect back on those mistakes and learn from them. Remember, crisis is an opportunity for growth. Keep building relationships. Keep creating a safe, supportive environment for our clients. Keep building skills. Keep moving forward.
